It looks like warm temperatures are about to arrive. It might be wise for you to schedule a radiator service at our shop to make sure your vehicle can make it through the summer. To keep your vehicle operating at optimum performance, make sure the antifreeze in your radiator is at its most effective mixture and avoid an unexpected breakdowns.

Why is antifreeze so important?

Radiators are normally filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. It is also referred to as coolant and is usually green or red in color. Antifreeze (or coolant) serves three main purposes:

• Keeps the water in your radiator and engine from freezing in winter.
• Keeps that same water from boiling over in the summer, and
• Lubricates moving parts, such as the water pump.

The key chemical component in antifreeze is ethylene glycol. This chemical additive lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid. When mixed correctly, radiator fluid generally won't freeze even if the temperature is less than 30 degrees below zero! It also keeps the same fluid from boiling at as much as 275 degrees F.

Don't let antifreeze lose its effectiveness!

Every so often, antifreeze needs to be refreshed once it has been mixed with water and put into use. If it starts to leak out, boils, or if the cooling system has been drained and refilled, the freeze protection has probably been compromised. In especially colder environments, the mixture may need more antifreeze and less water. Be sure to ask a professional radiator repair technician for the correct mixture for your driving conditions.

Note to Remember: Most automotive manufacturers recommend periodic complete replacement of the antifreeze to renew corrosion inhibitors and remove accumulated contaminants.
